The primary focus of the Discipline of Electrical Power is to undertake research and teaching activities of the highest international standards in electrical power engineering and related areas. Most of the current research activities conducted in Discipline of Electrical Power is funded by the government, university and industry. The research community in Discipline of Electrical Power is focusing towards internationally-leading research work that is beneficial to the society and publishes the findings in most of the prestigious international journals. Facilities
The faculty is equipped with sufficient resources, facilities and laboratories with experience laboratory assistants catering for the current needs in the curriculum of Electrical Engineering. In the faculty, Power System Lab, Machine and Drives Lab, Power Electronic Lab, High Voltage Lab, Advance Electric Machines Lab, Photovoltaic lab and are well established. In addition a good collection of up to date engineering reference books are on the shelves of the library.

Power Electronics And Drives
The research themes of this area mainly focusing on the Off-grid and On-grid PV systems; inverter performance for the On-grid PV system; advanced power electronic converter and inverter; bi-axial solar tracking for PV system; small-signal model for the three-phase ac-dc converter; three-phase synchronous PWM flyback converter with power factor correction; high frequency transformer core for dc-dc flyback converter; single-phase half-bridge active power filter (APF) with uninterruptible power supply (UPS), single-phase shunt APF using single-switch incorporating boost circuit, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) powered by fuel celland power induction heating using resonant techniques.
Power System
This academia who work into this research area mainly focuses on inter and multidisciplinary research in power system such as the assessment of transient and small signal stability; power system security, operation and planning; dynamic economic dispatch; power system reliability; transfer capability margin in power system deregulation; transfer cost allocation; load forecasting and load clustering; composite power system expansion planning; power system risk; distribution system improvement considering distributed generation and microgrid; loss minimization considering optimal reactive power dispatch, network reconfiguration and installation of compensating capacitor in distribution system; load shedding scheme in power system; lightning prediction; total ac power output prediction from a grid-photovoltaic system; optimal transformer tap changer setting; reactive power planning and FACT devices for voltage stability improvement. are conducted by taking into account the application of neural networks, wavelet, rough set theory, probabilistic mathematical approach, numerical mathematics, fuzzy set theory, fuzzy logic and biocomputation.
Power Quality
The power quality research in CEPES is specifically in the assessment of active and passive filter for harmonic mitigation; classification of transient; power quality diagnosis; identifying capacitor transients disturbances source; identifying voltage sag source location; dynamic voltage restorer for voltage sag mitigation and sensitive home appliances susceptibility to voltage sag.
High Voltage Engineering
This High voltage research area are concerning on research activities involving high voltage such as the non-contact partial discharge ultrasonic detection; three-phase single-stage high voltage dc converter and high voltage dc multiplier circuit.
Furthermore, the creation of the Research Interest Group (RIG), Power System Planning and Operation (PoSPO) and Power System Operation Computational Intelligence Research Group (POSC)to spearhead research and consultancy in areas related to power system optimization, energy management, power quality and renewable energy
